The Castro Theatre screens Lyes Salem’s dark comedy on opening night of the Arab Film Festival. ‘Masquerades’ tells the story of Mounir, a young Algerian misfit who informs the whole town his narcoleptic sister Nim is engaged to a handsome, wealthy foreigner. It’s a lie that earns Mounir respect from his fellow villagers (something he’s always craved), and estrangement from his own sister.
